Our Church History

Established 1868 • A Legacy of Faith & Service

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you"

Matthew 6:33

This verse is the foundation of Bethany's mission. We are committed to seeking God first, and He continues to bless this church abundantly. As part of the Southern Baptist Convention, we remain a Christ-centered fellowship dedicated to loving Him and sharing His love with others. Our sole purpose is to serve the One whose name is above every name, and we are alive because we serve a Savior who is alive.

The Founding Years

1868: A New Beginning

Before 1868, a group of believers separated from the Primitive Baptist Church to form a new congregation. Early services were held in a log cabin on the Billy Williams farm, with Rev. George Stapleton serving as pastor.

On October 28, 1867, Elizabeth McPhail donated two acres of land to the church—a quarter acre reserved for the burial ground. The church was officially established on April 4, 1868, with Daniel N. Fann as pastor. The congregation was named Bethany Baptist Church in honor of Bethany Forehand Stokes, wife of William Henry Stokes.

The first church building served dual purposes as both a place of worship and community school. Remarkably, many original architectural elements—including hand-drawn shingles and sills from towering pines—remain in use in the current building today.

Growth Through Dedication

1870s-1920s: Building Ministry

The early church records reveal strict spiritual discipline and a close-knit community. Early meeting minutes focused on calls for disciplinary cases and regular attendance requirements—members absent for three consecutive meetings were considered in disorder.

Key milestones during this era:

  • 1883: First recorded revival with 30 decisions in nine days
  • 1885: First Sabbath School organized
  • 1886: Church pledges $10 annually to Ebenezer College (now Middle Georgia State University)
  • 1897: First church organ purchased
  • 1902: Pastor B.S. Railey called with $10 monthly salary
  • 1918: Community encouraged to plant "church patches" with proceeds given to the Lord

These early believers possessed a spirit of enthusiasm, determination, and unwavering faith in God—qualities that built the church's rich heritage and strengthened the entire Bethany community.

A Church That Grows

1950s-1990s: Spiritual & Physical Expansion

By mid-century, Bethany had established itself as a spiritual powerhouse in the community. Revival meetings brought remarkable spiritual growth:

  • 1954: 24 baptisms during revival
  • 1955: 30 baptisms and 15 by letter

The church building underwent significant improvements to serve the growing congregation. The original sanctuary, heated by a pot-bellied stove, was transformed:

  • 1952: Building repairs approved
  • 1958: Brick veneer added to auditorium
  • 1962: Modern heating and air-conditioning system installed

Beyond local ministry, Bethany expanded its global witness. The first recorded gift to foreign missions was $16 in 1893, demonstrating early commitment to the Great Commission through the Southern Baptist Convention's Cooperative Program.

A New Century of Service

Centennial & Expansion (2005)

At the 100-year mark, Bethany took a bold step forward. On November 6, 2005, the congregation moved into a new 300-seat sanctuary during the morning worship service. The new structure was built in front of the existing building, adding modern Sunday school classrooms and offices. The original sanctuary became our Fellowship Hall—preserving our history while embracing our future.

Debt Freedom & Growth (2011-2014)

On May 1, 2011, Bethany celebrated a joyous Note Burning Ceremony, commemorating the complete payoff of the 2005 building debt. The ceremony included remarks from former pastors and Bold Mission Builders who made the project possible. In 2014, the church completed the addition of a new kitchen, further enhancing our ministry facilities.

Pastoral Leadership

The Lord has blessed Bethany with faithful pastoral leadership throughout our history. Brother Terry Moseley joined us as pastor on Sunday, April 26, 2010, bringing a heart of service and commitment to the Gospel.

Brother Moseley previously served as youth minister at Stone Creek Baptist Church in Twiggs County for two years, and as pastor of McIntyre Baptist Church from 2002-2010. His leadership has guided Bethany into a season of spiritual growth and renewed vision.

A Proud Past, A Hopeful Future

We give thanks to God for our forefathers and mothers in faith, whose sacrifices and dedication established the foundation we build upon today. As we honor our legacy, we remain committed to winning the lost for Christ and advancing His kingdom.

To God be the glory for the great things He has done, and for all He will do in the days to come.
