What Is Sin?

Very simply - sin is rebelling against God and against His laws. It is to do things our way instead of God's way.

The Bible tells us that we have all, at one point or another, sinned.

...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God..." [Rom 3:23]

Many of us have found ourselves trapped in the bondage of alcoholism, drug addiction, addiction to pornography and various other prisons of our own making.

This is not surprising, since the Bible tells us that our sins will enslave us:

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? [Rom 6:16]

Eventually, our sin leads to spiritual death:

...for the wages of sin is death... [Rom 6:23]

In this state of being spiritually dead, we have become separated from God:

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.  [Iss. 59:2]

Because of our disobedience, we have brought a curse upon ourselves:

...Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever. Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart... [Deut 28:45-47]

When we die, we will be judged by God, and rewarded or punished for how we lived our life:

...it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment [Heb 9:27]
