But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. [Luke 12:5]
It's not fashionable, today, to talk much about sin or hell - even in many churches. Jesus, however, spoke of hell and seemed to believe that it was vitally important to avoid the place:
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.[Matt 18:9] |
The Book of Revelation tells us who will be going to hell:
... the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone ... [Rev 21:8]
You may not believe that you belong in Hell or deserve Hell, but the Bible says that if you are a liar, if you've ever been sexually immoral, or acted in a cowardly way, or placed anything ahead of God in your life, that you will go to hell.
"But" you might say, "I'm basically a good person. I may have told a few lies in my life, but I'm not what you call a liar. I might have been sexually immoral once or twice in my life, but I don't make a practice of it."
The truth, though, is that a single lie is all it takes to condemn us to Hell for all eternity.
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. [James 2:10]
Because the standard is so high, all of us have fallen short of what is required:
... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God ... [Rom 3:23]
This may be a bit hard to accept, but MOST people will go to Hell when they die. Jesus told us this:
Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. [Matt 7:13-14]
You may, very well, be one of the many who will go to Hell when you die. We won't try to gloss over that notion, fearful as it is.
The fact of the matter is...there is a surefire way to avoid going to Hell, and it's as easy as making a decision.
